Garmin eTrex Legend
By: EbbTide

I checked out a number of GPS Receivers to buy and boy is it confusing. These days you have many choices in GPS technology.  I was looking for something small, simple and easy to use that would be in my budget.  I found the Garmin eTrex Legend that fit the bill perfectly.

If you're thinking of buying a small, light, multipurpose GPS unit that shines at a multitude of tasks, get one of these!  At less than $200.00, you won't be sorry.  The eTrex Legend comes with 8 MB of memory which can be used to download more detailed maps and save tracks, as well as other information that you store while using your GPS.  The GPS already comes with basic maps that include major roads and highways, but it does not include smaller streets and places of interest.  To solve this, you can upload additional maps onto your GPS, but this requires additional software purchases that do not come with the original GPS package.

Pros:

  • Maps can be downloaded easily with software
  • great easy to use functions
  • batteries last a long time: 2 AA last 12-15 hrs
  • good resolution
  • WAAS capable
  • attractive case
  • excellent backlit display
  • waterproof
  • outdoor durable
  • Cost
  • 8 MB

Cons:

  • sometimes slow to acquire signal
  • joystick control can be twitchy
  • no external antenna option
  • no audible sound
  • only Garmin brand software can be used to load maps
